Students in Holly Schindler's Grade 1 class at Highland Elementary School celebrated a special milestone on June 10 as they released nine painted lady butterflies after spending several weeks learning about the caterpillar life cycle.

As part of a hands-on science unit, the students observed each stage of the transformation process firsthand. They carefully watched the caterpillars grow, form chrysalides, and eventually emerge as beautiful butterflies right in their classroom. The experience gave students a unique opportunity to connect classroom lessons with real-world science.

When it came time for the butterflies to be released, excitement filled the air. Many of the butterflies quickly spread their wings and took flight, while a few lingered nearby long enough for students to enjoy an even closer look before continuing their journey into nature.

The butterfly project helped students develop observation skills, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the life cycle of living things. It also provided a memorable learning experience that brought science to life in a meaningful way.

The special release marked the culmination of weeks of learning and created lasting memories for students as they watched their butterflies take flight.
